How to Reconnect With Yourself When Life Feels Busy

Sometimes you can be busy for so long that you forget to check in with yourself.

You're getting things done, looking after everyone else, answering messages, going to work, managing the house, making plans and generally keeping everything moving. From the outside, you're functioning perfectly well. But somewhere underneath all of that, there might be a quiet feeling that you've lost touch with yourself.

You know what everyone else needs. You're just not quite sure what **you** need anymore.

I've come to realise that it's surprisingly easy to lose yourself in the busyness of everyday life. Not because you've deliberately chosen to, but because there is always something that needs doing and someone who needs something from you.

We can get very good at being who we're needed to be

Most of us have lots of roles. Partner, parent, friend, daughter, leader, employee, business owner, carer. There's nothing wrong with any of those roles. They're important parts of our lives.

But when we're constantly responding to what other people need from us, it can become difficult to hear our own voice.

What do I actually enjoy? What gives me energy? What am I curious about? What do I want more of? What have I stopped doing because there simply isn't time?

Those questions can feel surprisingly difficult when you've spent years being good at getting on with things.

Sometimes we don't even realise how disconnected we've become until something makes us stop.

For me, it took a fairly dramatic life change to realise just how much of my identity had become wrapped up in what I did, what I could achieve and how well I could keep everything under control.

It made me start paying much more attention to the quieter parts of myself.

Reconnecting with yourself doesn't have to be complicated

I think we sometimes turn self-connection into another thing we have to be good at.

We imagine we need meditation, journalling, long walks in nature or an hour of uninterrupted quiet every morning. Those things can be wonderful, but I don't think reconnecting with yourself needs to become another item on an already overwhelming to-do list.

It can start with noticing.

Notice what makes you feel lighter. Notice what leaves you depleted. Notice the conversations you keep thinking about afterwards. Notice when you feel most like yourself. Notice the things you keep saying you'd love to do "one day".

These little observations can tell us a lot.

You might realise that you're spending a lot of time doing things that are expected of you and very little time doing things that actually energise you.

Or perhaps you'll notice that you're constantly busy because slowing down gives you too much space to think. Sometimes the first step towards reconnecting with yourself is simply being curious about what you notice.

Give yourself some space to hear yourself

One of the biggest challenges is that we rarely leave much room for an answer.

We fill the silence with podcasts, social media, emails, television, work and other people's opinions. Sometimes we don't even realise how noisy life has become until we get a moment of quiet.

You don't need to disappear to a retreat or change your entire life. Try taking a walk without your phone. Sit with a cup of tea without immediately reaching for something else to do. Drive without listening to anything. Write down what's on your mind without worrying about whether it makes sense.

Give yourself a little space and see what surfaces.

You might not need to become someone new

I think this is the part I've come to appreciate most.

Reconnecting with yourself isn't necessarily about finding a better version of you. It's about remembering what was already there.

The things you loved before life got so busy. The values you cared about before everyone else's priorities became part of yours. The parts of yourself that got quieter because they weren't particularly useful at the time.

You might discover that you don't need a completely different life. Maybe you need more of the things that make you feel like you.

More time outside. More creativity. More adventure. More rest. More honest conversations. More saying no. More saying yes.

Or perhaps simply more time listening to your own thoughts before everyone else's get a chance to take over.

Start small

If you feel disconnected from yourself, you don't have to figure everything out today.

Start by asking one simple question

**What would feel good for me today?**

Not what should feel good. Not what would be productive. Not what would make everyone else happy.

It might be something tiny. A walk. An early night. Time alone. Calling someone you love. Doing something creative. Sitting outside with a cup of tea.

The answer doesn't have to change your life.

Paying attention to the answer is the important part.

Because reconnecting with yourself isn't usually one big moment where everything suddenly becomes clear. It's a collection of small moments when you stop, listen and remember that your own needs, thoughts and feelings deserve a place in your life too.

And sometimes, that's enough to begin finding your way back to yourself.
